1. What does GUIDE do?
GUIDE seeks to build meaningful mentor relationships between upperclassmen and the freshmen class. The Guide will act as a foundation of support for the freshman during their time at Texas A&M, and serve as an aide in the development of their Aggie Spirit.
2. How does that work?
GUIDE consists of approximately 30 upperclassmen (Guides) with an equal number of freshmen. Each freshman is then paired with a Guide that will serve as a mentor during their first year at Texas A&M. These fish-guide pairs are then grouped into six teams. The purpose of the team is to help foster the growth of the fish-guide relationship in a more intimate setting. Teams meet every other week to participate in an activity planned by their team leader. In addition, GUIDE will have all member meetings on alternating weeks. These meetings are meant to serve the freshmen in their transition into college life, understanding of Aggie Traditions, development of social networks, and exposure to numerous speakers. As the focus of this organization is not leadership, but rather an experience, speakers will be chosen on the basis of A&M experiences, life experiences, and motivational skills to share with the freshmen.
3. I want to be a Guide, what do I need to know?
The decision to be a Guide is a tremendous opportunity to make a difference on an incoming freshman’s experience at Texas A&M. A Guide should express the values of compassion, outreach, impact, acceptance, and excitement. Every Aggie should take it upon themselves to ensure that the Aggie Spirit is passed on to future generations. The Guide should be a very visible example of the Aggie Spirit as to do our part to provide for the future. A Guide should exude the qualities of integrity and uphold the responsibilities of being a mentor as well as the mission and values of GUIDE. As a mentor, the Guide should provide an open, accepting environment. This attitude will allow the Guide to connect quickly with their freshman and have the largest possible impact on their experience at Texas A&M.
4. I want to be a fish in GUIDE, what do I need to know?
We are looking for freshmen that we feel can most benefit from the services our organization offers. We want freshmen that show a strong desire to participate in our organization. GUIDE was developed with the purpose of serving you, the freshman class, and is looking to provide the most memorable first year experience at Texas A&M. There are a large variety of people to meet and experiences to be had by being a member of GUIDE. The organization provides the freshman class with an opportunity to develop their Aggie Spirit, create lasting friendships, participate in service for the community, and establish their role in the Aggie family. The Aggie family encompasses all of us and serves as a support system during our years at Texas A&M and beyond. We are so excited about the Class of 2011!!!
5. What else does GUIDE do?
GUIDE participates in numerous activities outside of meetings and team times. These include service activities such as: Replant, Big Event, Relay for Life, Campus Clean-Up, visiting the local nursing homes, etc. As an organization, we also attend football games, have all-member hangouts, participate in organizational retreats, hold fundraisers, and more! We also have exciting Crush Parties at the end of each semester.
